Attention, federal employees: Starting today (Dec. 30), texting from behind the wheel while on the clock, or while using government vehicles, or while using government-supplied devices in any car at any time, is prohibited.

It’s the result of an Executive Order signed by President Obama on Oct. 1. It affects more than 4 million federal employees, according to the Department of Transportation.

The Department also issued a new PSA on the issue, viewable at www.distraction.gov, although two of the three distracted drivers in the video are speaking on mobile phones, not texting. Speaking on mobile phones while driving is not covered by the order, although it is prohibited in some jurisdictions, including Washington, D.C.

The order apparently does not cover other forms of distracted driving, such as viewing messages or information on a mobile device.

The Department of Transportation’s 58,000 employees have already been subject to the order.
