The U.S. Navy’s Naval Surface Warfare Center has approved a $50 million contract with L-3 Communications, a producer of night-vision and electro-optical systems and components, for the company’s smaller and lighter night-vision goggles.

Under the terms of the firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract, L-3 will provide its Binocular Night Vision Device (BNVD), a miniature, dual-tube goggle containing advanced optics and high performance image intensifier tubes, says Ken Solinsky, L-3 Warrior Systems’ president. The BNVD’s configuration makes it the world's smallest, lightest, best-performing and most cost-effective night vision product available, he said.

While the contract is with the Navy, the BNVDs will go to the U.S. Special Operations Command, a unit in charge of all the U.S. militaries’ special forces. The equipment will provide special operations forces with enhanced surveillance, identification, recognition and detection capability in all light conditions, especially where vision is limited or restricted due to low light conditions, Solinsky said.
