The Department of Commerce and other federal agencies are holding a public meeting Tuesday (March 10) to describe some of the business opportunities expected to arise from the economic stimulus package signed by President Obama Feb 17.

“The Broadband Initiatives funded [in the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act] are intended to accelerate broadband deployment in unserved, underserved, and rural areas and to strategic institutions that are likely to create jobs or provide significant public benefits,” the FCC said in its announcement of the meeting.

The stimulus legislation includes funding for the new Broadband Technology Opportunities Program, the new Rural Development Broadband Program, and the development of a National Broadband Plan.

Speakers at the event include Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack; Anna Gomez, acting administrator of the National Telecommunication and Information Administration; Rick Wade, the NTIA chief of staff; Michael Copps, acting FCC chairman; and others.

The “Broadband Initiative Kick-Off” runs from 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Commerce Department headquarters, 1401 Constitution Avenue NW in Washington.

The event will be streamed online here and archived on the various agency sites.
