Got high crime and the threat of terrorism but not enough money to create a state-of-the-art video security network? In Russia and Eastern Europe, they're turning to inexpensive, locally CCTV brands that may lack the quality and features of international brands.

“Russian suppliers offer an appealing solution to customers looking to install video surveillance equipment on a tight budget," said William Rhodes, research analyst and author of the report at England-based IMS research. "The equipment may not have the same feature set as some international brands but it fulfills the customers’ basic requirements.”

The report, "The East Europe and Russian Market for Video Surveillance Equipment," says the cost-cutting has led to an increase in sales for local, Russian video surveillance equipment suppliers in 2009 and the first half of 2010.

“Ironically, many Russian suppliers have benefited in the past 18 months from the tough economic conditions by creating a strong position for themselves against overseas brands," Rhodes said. "It will be tough for them to continue this success as they lack the marketing budgets and diverse product features that are needed to compete against the multinational, overseas brands. Russian brands can defend their new position through increased investment in marketing, strengthening their sales channels and partnerships, and producing products that target the lucrative enterprise and project market.”

Last week, IMS reported that the market for video surveillance in China was expected to grow at 20 percent annually through 2014.
