Registration for the 2013 Shoot Off Video competition is being accepted and not only military and government personnel can participate, but multimedia journalists and anyone with an interest in visual media, according to Shoot Off officials.
The Shoot Off Video competition is scheduled for May 2-5 in Arlington, Va. at the NavyLeagueBuilding. Participants start the workshop in training sessions featuring industry leaders and guest speakers including Arun Chaudhary, former White House videographer, Jim Fabio, of NFL Films, Bill Gentile, of American University, Richard Harrington, of RHED Pixel, Garrett Hubbard, of Garrett Hubbard Studios, and Bethany Swain of the University of Maryland.
“Some of the best speakers, mentors and judges throughout the industry volunteer for this event,” says Johnny Bivera, executive director and founder of Shoot Off Visual Media Workshops. “These workshops are for all levels and provide professional development, offering essential training to our military and civil service photographers and videographers,” Bivera added.
Once the lectures are complete, the remainder of the workshop is a 36-hour competition where each team of participants must produce a short news, documentary or feature entry, according to Shoot Off officials. Teams are assigned a mentor to assist in successfully completing their projects, the officials add.
Hands-on mentoring is a big part of what the Shoot Off workshop is about and “the mentors are the real strength of the workshop,” says Juan Femath Video Workshop Producer. “Mentors are former and current military videographers, broadcasters and producers. They are subject-matter experts that have the experience and desire to share their knowledge with others,” he says.
