Harris Introduces ‘SFP6800’ Fiber-Optic Transport

Harris Broadcast Communications, a provider of workflow options, introduces the SFP6800+D, its next-generation fiber-optoelectronic transmission product (OPTO+) designed to transport electrical signals around fixed and remote broadcast facilities.

The Harris SFP6800+D is a processing module that supports up to 60 channels in a “two rack unit” (2RU) design for high-density fiber-optic transport, the company says. The module can function as a fiber transmitter or receiver, supporting both digital and analog signals, and configurations for multiple optical paths, according to the firm. It has six small form-factor pluggable cages that support coaxial, HDMI/DVI, baseband encoding/decoding, Harris says.

In addition, the SFP6800+D module has a 12x12 integrated routing matrix that allows broadcasters to transport different channels to different destinations, Harris says. The built-in capability also supports redundant transport architectures, with signal monitoring and switching from main to backup channels across all six SFP cages, eliminating the need for additional fiber modules or an external system, the firm adds.

The module supports traditional requirements for reliable transport of higher bandwidth signals like 3 Gigabytes over long distances with no loss. It also gives smaller facilities an option for optical transport over shorter distances, Harris says. Mobile production trucks especially benefit from the reduced weight compared to electrical wiring, the company says.

“More broadcasters are turning to fiber-optics for signal transport as the price of glass becomes more competitive than legacy wiring,” said Paul Eisner, Harris’s vice president of workflow, infrastructure and networking. “This is especially ideal for customers that want to transport signals at 3 Gigabytes and higher over any distance with pristine quality,” he adds.
