The National Institute on Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) mission “is to lead the nation is bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction.” NIDA—a National Institutes of Health agency—says that mission has two critical components, supporting research on drug abuse and addiction treatment and prevention; and quick dissemination of the data to improve treatment, prevention and government policy.

However, while supporting research is NIDA’s chartered mission, it does not leave drug abuse prevention solely to other agencies, and especially picks up that mantel when the focus is on youth. It does that on its website by providing schools with tools designed to keep teenagers and young adults (in fact, the section “Students & Young Adults” is at the center top of NIDA’s homepage) from using drugs by providing the facts. Fighting drug abuse among any population is a very difficult job indeed, but one Dr. Nora Volkow, NIDA’s director, has undertaken with real commitment.

Because of NIDA’s use of its website to help fight drug abuse and addiction, it is Government Video’s Website of the Week.
