The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) mission is to collaborate to create the expertise, information and tools that people and communities need to protect their health. It does its mission—in part—through health promotion, prevention of disease, injury and disability and preparedness for new health threats.
Among the health promotions the CDC has in its arsenal is CDC-TV, which provides videos on scores of health-related topics including teen pregnancy; the obesity epidemic; methods for dealing with arthritis; cancer screening and fighting the flu to name a few. The videos take difference approaches including celebrity testimonials; among those, there is a heartbreaking video in which actor Terrance Howard tells how his mother died of colon cancer. He then urges everyone be screened for colorectal cancer.
But there are also amusing videos that take a lighter approach such as “VSI; Vaccination Scene Investigation” which is presented as a crime drama and details four diseases and why those who are at risk for those diseases should receive vaccinations. The video feature actors in different vaccination “cases.” In one, a woman who has been vaccinated for shingles looks at the camera and gives a knowing nod.
