California Broadcast Installs SGL Archive System

The system will store unedited content offline available for quick access.

The California Channel, a public service broadcaster, has installed an archiving system developed by Software Generation Ltd (SGL), a provider of content archive and storage management software for media and entertainment.

The California Channel contract SGL, a British company with offices in Cincinnati, to install the archiving system as a way to improve and speed up its offline workflow procedures.

Prior to installing the SGL archiving system, the network’s excess video content was off-loaded to standalone disk drives, which meant that tracking and reloading content was problematic. The network records vast quantities of unedited material and so it was important that operators could store content offline but could still access that content quickly and easily. The SGL archive has solved this problem by allowing easy offloading and restoration of Omneon-encoded video content from/to the channel’s Omneon server as and when required.

The California Channel is funded entirely by California’s cable television operators as a means to provide its citizens direct access to the gavel-to-gavel proceedings of the California Legislature and other public policy forums. Bob Olson, the California Channel’s consulting engineer said, “The SGL archive integrates seamlessly with Avid’s Sundance automation and a SpectraLogic T120 tape library.”

Mickey Charles, SGL’s president Americas said, broadcasters must be able to manage, store and retrieve their assets quickly and easily using a fully integrated workflow that is seamless to the operator. “This installation highlights a number of key issues that can be resolved or improved by implementing more efficient workflows provided by a managed digital archive,” he said.
