The Royal Australia Air Force credits Christie, a visual display solution provider, with helping Wedgetail AEW&C 737 operational flight trainer to retain its FSD-1 Level five accreditation by providing a new visual system.
The OFT was originally manufactured by Thales Australia and Thales UK, and has been in service since 2006.
Thales and Christie Digital Systems Australia Pty. Ltd. partnered on the visual upgrade project to replace the simulator’s calligraphic cathode ray tube projectors with a Christie Matrix smart transducer interface module light emitting diode-illuminated projection system, and a new connection oriented transport service-based image generation system running ThalesViewNG real-time software was also installed.
Utilizing the technology of the Thales 737NG-based flight simulator and Christie’s three-channel projection system, the OFT enables flight crews to experience the audiovisual experience, as well as the motion, of the Wedgetail’s cockpit. The new system enables previously impractical training sequences, including aircraft emergencies, air-to-air refueling operations and electronic warfare self-protection operations.
Michael Otero of Thales Australia said the system provides “significantly better color and brightness uniformity, sharper imagery, and imperceptible edge blending,” as well as “reliability and growth potential.”
“Christie Matrix StIM is the first simulation system to provide simultaneous and independent control over both the visible and near-IR spectrum using LED illumination,” said Lin Yu, Christie Asia Pacific’s vice president. “With its real-time balancing and optimization of color, brightness and black levels on a frame-by-frame basis, it offers a virtually maintenance-free, environmentally-friendly simulation solution for [the] RAAF.”
