According to a story in The New York Times, Chicago has taken a major step to use its network of surveillance cameras in emergency response.

The system detects a 911 caller’s location and, within seconds, shows the dispatcher an image from the closest available camera, according to the story.

The boss of the city’s system told The Times that if a caller is within 150 feet of a camera, the dispatcher will get the image. The system also plans to connect with private security camera networks.
