The Russian military has purchased an undisclosed number of unmanned aerial vehicles from the government-owned Israeli Aerospace Industries.

Russian and Israeli news reports say the purchase followed unsatisfactory performance of Russian-made drones in the conflict in Georgia. Those UAVs were too noisy, and an identification system failed to work, resulting in vehicles taking fire from even Russian forces.

The Moscow Times reported that Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin said the drones—three different types—would not be used in combat, but for research so Russia could improve its own vehicles.

Popovkin visited Israel to check out the aircraft and even operated one, the Times said.

The deal is estimated at more than $50 million.
