The city of Wilmington, N.C., has applied for a federal grant to record license plates on certain roads and check them against a list of possible miscreants.

According to the (Wilmington) StarNewsOnline, the proposed system would run plate numbers through the FBI’s National Crime Information Center and look for people with warrants or criminal records or who are of interest to the police.

Local police would then be notified.

The nearby town of Wrightsville Beach has also applied for a grant for similar technology, the newspaper reported.
