Fujinon, the giant maker of high-end lenses and optical systems and especially zoom lenses, is hanging up the name.

Effective July 1, Fujinon Inc. wishes to be known as FUJIFILM Optical Devices U.S.A., Inc., a newly formed subsidiary of FUJIFILM North America Corp.

The decree moves the following product areas under the Fujifilm Optical Devices banner: CCTV, which markets lenses for the security, surveillance, factory automation and machine vision; Industrial Optics, which distributes front-view/rear-views automobile camera lenses, digital cinema projection lenses, laser-focusing lenses, and lenses for scanners and digital cameras; and Special Products, which markets high-end binoculars, including stabilized binoculars to the government and marine market.

Fujinon's endoscopy division will become part of Fujifilm Medical Systems U.S.A, Inc., a provider of digital x-ray systems, among other products.

Fujinon's optics are everywhere in the broadcast, digital cinema and industrial sectors. Its television zoom lenses are used in virtually every segment of the broadcast industry, including electronic newsgathering, studio and field production, and HDTV.

Fujifilm has pegged the optical device business as one of its main priorities, and the company said the restructuring "will help us to reinforce those global objectives; align businesses to drive growth in these markets; and take advantage of synergies and shared services that will allow the company to serve our customers more effectively."
