GV Expo Panel Set to Explore Video in Social Media

WASHINGTON—Social media isn’t just for tweeting the latest hashtags or gifs, and Col. Martin Downie will be stressing that during a series of presentations at this year’s Government Video Expo.

Col. Downie, the commandant of the Defense Information School at Fort Meade in Maryland, will lead the “Visual First—Smart Use of Video in Social Media and Beyond” session, first with a keynote and then as moderator of a panel. Col. Downie’s keynote will focus on the need in government and military for new-generation multiplatform communicators with an emphasis on “visual first.”

The panel will feature government and military professionals on how to engage viewers and communicate with them effectively through visual approaches to social media.

Col. Downie is the 19th commandant of the Defense Information School after being named to the position in 2015. He leads a team of 400 military, civilian and contractor professionals in training 2,200 students a year in various public affairs and visual information disciplines. He is the former chief of public affairs, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, and former deputy division chief for the Army’s Chief of Public Affairs.

GV Expo 2017 will take place from Nov. 29-30 in Washington D.C. Col. Downie’s presentation will take place on Nov. 30.
