| Polycom Slashing Telepresence Bandwidth Needs in Half |

Polycom's immersive Open Telepresence Experience (OTX) 300 is coming to Infocomm 2010, promising full 1080p video teleconferencing at half the bandwidth of traditional H.264-based systems, bringing HD video at a data rate as low as 512 Kbps.
The company estimates that the reduction in network costs could save a mid-sized enterprise as much as $2.1 million a year.
The savings come form the implementation of H.264 High Profile video compression technology. Polycom is the first telepresence provider to implement the standard. The OTX 300 will begin shipping in the third quarter of 2010.

Polycom will also make the standard available for its RMX Video Bridge, meaning that those users will be able to operate at the reduced data rate even of the people on the other end of the videoconference are using technology from other providers at a high bandwidth.
The same standard can also reduce bandwidth needs for standard-definition videoconferencing to as little as 128 Kbps--meaning even a user of an entry-level satellite service like the new one from Inmarsat, offering 176 Kbps connections almost anywhere in the world, could benefit.
The Polycom OTX 300 will be demonstrated at InfoComm 2010 this week in Las Vegas.
