| Proposed DHS Budget Plan Cuts Secure Border Initiative Funding |

SBI--which includes SBInet, the network of cameras, sensors and analytic power designed to help stop unlawful border crossings--is slated for a funding cut of more than 20 percent from its enacted Fiscal Year 2010 level.
The budget request released Monday (Feb. 1) by DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano calls for $574 million for the Secure Border Initiative in FY 2011, down $158 million from FY 2010 enacted level.
The FY 2011 plan would continue the expansion of the project to the northern border; permits deployments of new tactical infrastructure, tactical
communications modernization, deployment of other technology (such as mobile sensor capabilities); and continues to support field maintenance and logistics activities for deployed tactical infrastructure.
Earlier this year, Napolitano called for a thorough review of SBInet following years of criticism over costs and apparent technological shortfalls.
