Website of the Week: InfoFarm, the National Agricultural Library Blog

Info Farm, the blog of the USDA National Agricultural Library, doesn't pack hi-tech visual imaging, or deal with the most high-profile issues of the day. InfoFarm even disclaims connection with its host agency, noting that the bloggers' comments are not to misconstrued as official communications from the NAL, the Agricultural Research Service or the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

But when the nation is deep in a debate about its future health care AND the holidays the approaching, would it kill us to take a closer look at what we eat?

Enter InfoFarm. Right now it's in the midst of a series of postings on Thanksgiving. There are practical tips about calculating needed turkey size, and some even more useful tips about how to safely thaw one. Got a family feud over the proper preparation of Holiday fare? If you want to back up your argument with the USDA and FDA, this site may be for you.

Plus, it provides easy links to USDA resources like Nutrition.gov, with rich data bases of nutritional information, plus information on supplements and food safety and easy links to a variety of other Web pages of the FDA and other agencies.

Put another way, even people who consider themselves well informed and conscientious about their food sources could learn something here.

And there's a link to Michelle Obama's appearance on Sesame Street where she helped Elmo with some gardening.

So for trying to whack some sense into America's eating habits, especially during the holidays, InfoFarm is the Government Video Website of the Week, with honorable mention to numerous other pages in the USDA family.

The National Agricultural Library, by the way, provides a wealth of information on topic like invasive species, trade and commerce, rural life, water quality, organic foods and many other health, business and natural resource issues.

Check out last week's Website of the Week, where the World Digital Library brings historic maps and manuscripts from around the world to your desk.
