NATO Saving Time, Money With Polycom Telepresence
November 4, 2009

NATO recently deployed telepresence solutions from Polycom, Inc. to improve operational efficiency and is now racking up the savings.

Deployed in six international locations, the technology is used daily for central command communications, emergency management, critical needs assessment, crisis communications, intra/interagency collaboration, workgroup collaboration and project management.

Polycom TPX 306M solutions allow participants to see nuances in facial expressions and other non-verbal communications that simulate being in the same room. Each VMR was designed with the same boardroom-style environment to enhance the “same room” experience. Users can share virtually any type of multimedia content as part of meeting.

NATO recently replaced a series of quarterly in-person meetings with telepresence, resulting in an estimated cost savings of $51,000, 500 hours of travel time and 21,000 kilograms of carbon emissions for a single quarterly session.

“It ensures that when complex missions require a well-coordinated response among other government agencies and international organizations, NATO is able connect and reach locations worldwide,” said Joseph Moeder, Deputy Director for NATO Operations, ManTech Global Services Corp. “In addition, NATO can maximize its previous investments in video conferencing technology throughout the Alliance.”
