DHS Unveils 'Recognizing 8 Signs of Terrorism' Video

A new video funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is letting Americans know what kinds of activities might be a sign of terrorist activity in the making. The 8-minute video, “Recognizing 8 Signs of Terrorism” outlines some of the things potential terrorists might be doing, and lets citizens know where to report the suspicious activities.

The video will be shown at the Center for Empowered Living & Learning (CELL), an institution dedicated to addressing the global threat of terrorism, with a museum facility (called Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere: Understanding the Threat) in Denver. The facility includes exhibits on the history of terrorism and its prevention.

“The vigilance of individual citizens is critical to protecting our country from the threat of terrorism,” said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, who unveiled the video with Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter during a tour of CELL. “This video provides essential information on how to identify the warning signs and emphasizes the vital role of such assistance in state and local law enforcement’s counterterrorism efforts.”

The eight signs of terrorism described in the film are surveillance; elicitation (trying to obtain information); tests of security; funding; acquiring supplies; impersonation; rehearsal; and deployment.

The film is narrated by former Denver Bronco quarterback John Elway and local news anchor Kim Christiansen and was produced through a partnership between the Colorado Office of Homeland Security, the Colorado Department of Agriculture, the Colorado Information Analysis Center and CELL.
