Pentagon Establishes New Cyber Subcommand
June 24, 2009

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates boosted the military’s attention to cyber-security, establishing a subcommand focused on the issue and reportedly recommending Army Lt. Gen. Keith B. Alexander, director of the National Security Agency, to take on the additional job.

American Forces Press Services said cyber command HQ is planned for Fort Meade, Md.

"This is not some sort of new and necessarily different authorities that have been granted," a Pentagon spokesman told AFPS. "This is about trying to figure out how we, within this department, within the United States military, can better coordinate the day-to-day defense, protection and operation of the department's computer networks."

Pentagon officials stressed that the subcommand would tackle only military cyber-security and was not a move militarize cyberspace or take over the responsibility for defending civilian networks. That’s the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security Department, one official told AFPS.

There’s more on Alexander here.
