Next month, where might you find some video experts from DOD and the NSA? Where will you find the inventor of 1080-line HDTV and those involved in the development of SDI and MP3? They'll all be at the HPA's 15th annual Technology Retreat in Rancho Mirage, CA, Feb. 17-20. HPA stands for Hollywood Post Alliance, but don't be fooled by their name -- the retreat is consistently ranked as the top video technology event of the year (and actually predates the creation of HPA itself). It's the only event that has featured representatives of both NATO the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and NATO the National Association of Theater Owners, as well as MPEG the Moving Picture Experts Group and MPEG the Motion Picture Editors Guild. Panasonic introduced the Varicam and Sony introduced HDCAM SR at previous retreats, which also included Lucas Digital's (Industrial Light & Magic) camera-attitude sensor and the only demonstration outside Europe of Squarehead Technology's Audioscope directive-beam sound-capture system
. Extended color-gamut technology, high dynamic range displays, precision auto focus, audio localization, and high frame rate systems have also been featured in the demo room. The 2009 HPA Technology Retreat will feature a hands-on workshop on the mathematics of HDTV, the latest stereoscopic-imaging developments, an exploration of reference monitoring in the age of new display technologies, 3 Gbps HD-SDI and gigabit-Ethernet infrastructures, advanced hardware/software/storage technologies, real-world data transfer results, the effects of imager color filtering, spatial hearing, and a report from the SMPTE task force on sync and timing, among other presentations. The event has sold out its capacity each year.
