Bowling Green PBS station upgrades router
by GV staff

PBS member station WBGU, Bowling Green, OH, has installed Pro-Bel router and router control at its facility. The integration was carried out by ProVideo Systems.
WBGU is owned by Bowling Green State University and has been in operation since 1964. The station is broadcast on Channel 27 UHF over 19 Ohio counties. It now also broadcasts four digital services: a simulcast of the PBS service; PBS Kids; WBGU-YOU, which is mostly educational programming; and the Encore Channel, which runs 24/7 and carries programming that the station has produced over the years.
Time Warner Cable takes all four channels. WBGU is also part of the Ohio Educational Broadcasting System whereby content is shared, via DS3 links, with nine other stations.

Bowe said the ability of the Sirius router to handle both SD and HD in a compact frame was a core reason for the purchase. The Sirius is 128x128, configured 32x32 and split 24x24 SD/HD and 8x8 analog. Each input and output is capable of four discreet audio channels, two AES or two stereo analog. The station is also using Pro-Bel's Aurora router control system.
WBGU is continuing to use its old Jupiter VTS router courtesy of 14 X-Y panels that it has purchased from Pro-Bel. The facility now has the ability to centrally control both the existing and new technology.
"In the evening we do have the capability to switch over to HD when PBS is feeding us HD programming," explained Al Bowe, chief engineer. "When we do that we continue to broadcast PBS Kids. At this point we can't produce or store HD here, but in the future we will."
