Among the U.S. armed services there are about 800 photographers and videographers deployed worldwide who supply the top military leadership with images that help determine wartime strategy.
Many of those photographers and videographers received training in their craft at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) at Fort Meade, Md. The included Navy photographer Mass Communication Specialist Bobby McRill, who—in 2007—was killed by an improvised explosive device while on duty in Iraq. McRill left a wife and three children.
In recognition of McRill’s skill and service to the country, the Navy’s Chief of Information and DINFOS have established an award named in his honor that is presented to an outstanding graduate of DINFOS’ Basic Mass Communication Specialist Course (BMCSC). In April 2009, Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Kathleen O’ Keefe received the first MC1 Bobby McRill Excellence Award, and since then, the award has been bestowed to 21 more BMCSC graduates. Because Veterans Day is a time “to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” Government Video is listing all the Bobby McRill Excellence Award recipients by year and the class they graduated with. They are:
